Backing up a SSRS report file

SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) doesn’t appear to have a specific export function, but it is important to be able to back up an existing report definition.
You may want to do this

  1. prior to a new deployment,
  2. to edit the report,
  3. or even just to interrogate the XML definition of the report.

Step 1

Open your browser and browse to the server where SSRS is available.
E.g. http://myserver:8080/Reports/

Step 2

Click Show Details from the top menu bar.

Step 3

Click on the edit button for the specific report you want to back up.

Step 4

Click the Edit link in Report Definition section, under the Properties tab.

This will download the .rdl file for the report.
